Much has been written about the duties and responsibilities of directors and the role of volunteers in organizations. Everyone now agrees that directors must understand their legal obligations to the organizations and appreciate the non-legal expectations they will face from staff and other stakeholders.
But what does it take for a merely competent board member, or even a very good one, to become a great director? What characteristics and behaviours take us beyond legal obligations and basic expectations to a truly inspired -- and inspiring -- volunteer contribution?
This monograph is aimed at those volunteer directors who aspire to bring more to their board tables and maximize the benefit of their time and talent on behalf of the organizations they serve. It provides a blueprint for how individuals can change their own behaviour to become exceptional volunteers and, in turn, inspire others to work together to create an exceptional board.
