A new study produced by Heidrick & Struggles and George Mason University School of Law indicates association CEOs face a plethora of new challenges related to the ever-changing role of the position.
“Association boards of directors want their CEOs to serve not only as the leader of their organization, but also in many cases as the face and voice of their industry,” the report says. “The CEO now is the lead salesperson, industry promoter, and top organizational fundraiser, among other operational responsibilities.”

While the lower graphic on self-doubt may seem surprising, Heidrick & Struggles’ research from early last year revealed that 71 percent of CEOs in the private sector experienced self-doubt in similar circumstances – an obvious indicator of the evolving tough decisions CEOs must make.
