Associations Make a Better Canada

The Associations Make A Better Canada Awards recognize CSAE member organizations that have initiated innovative projects resulting in positive outcomes in the areas of public education/information, public affairs/government relations, professional development and education, and ethical, technical or professional standards. One award is given in each of the four categories for programs that have demonstrated successful results within the previous 12 months (May 1, 2014 – April 30, 2015). 

Public Information/Education

Organization has created and distributed valuable information to policymakers, regulators, or the news media that enhanced public understanding about the efficiency, quality and safety of products and services. The initiative likely strengthened consumer confidence in the marketplace and/or may have improved government and/or public support for your organization and its members.

Public Affairs/Government Relations

Organization has undertaken a key initiative on a single government affairs issue where activities have resulted in a positive outcome. The issue may have been of short-term duration or crisis-oriented and encompassed a government lobbying/awareness campaign.

Professional Development and Education

Organization has developed and disseminated best-practice information among members to support the application of new skills and the development of a competitive and skilled workforce.

Ethical, Technical or Professional Standards

Organization has developed and implemented significant guidance documents, training programs and efforts to build commitment to raising the standards of your industry or profession for the sake of those served. Evaluations of the outcomes arising from these efforts are also eligible.


  • Awards are presented for programs that have demonstrated successful results within the previous 12 months (May 1, 2014 – April 30, 2015)
  • Programs may be community-based, provincial, national or international, but must originate within Canada
  • Programs may have been implemented over a period of years, though results of the program should have been demonstrated within the twelve month period described above. ​
The judging committee will be looking for programs that have:
  • Demonstrated excellence in leadership, structure and governance of the Association through strategic thinking complemented by tactical implementation
  • Well-established metrics clearly tied to strategic objectives (both project objective and in support of the organization's goals/mission).
  • Displayed uniqueness and/or innovation during their planning and implementation 
  • Resulted in significant positive impacts (benefits) to members and/or society
  • Demonstrate planning and execution of internal, external and integrated programs that serve members, volunteers and/or engage external stakeholders
  • The ability to be replicated by other organizations 


  • Open to all CSAE (Executive and Business) member organizations. One entry per category. No restrictions apply to the number of categories entered.
  • The individual submitting the entry (or entries) on behalf of the organization must be a CSAE member
  • Organizations may submit multiple entries, but only one entry per category


Submission must be submitted in digital format and include: 

  • Application form
  • Reports, brochures and other materials describing the program may be included as attachments
  • A summary (500 words or less). Judges will consider only the descriptions and attachments provided. It is important to provide information as completely – and as concisely – as possible
  • Programs objectives with specific metrics for success
  • Submissions should answer the following questions: 
    • When and why was this initiative undertaken?
    • What were its goals and objectives?
    • How did they relate to the goals/mission of the organization?
    • How were these goals met?
    • What were the measurable outcomes of the initiative and its benefits to members and/or society?

2013 Winners

Professional Development/Education
Canadian Cardiovascular Society
This Society is promoting cardiovascular health by establishing collaboration between organizations that represent the professionals who treat these issues. A united medical conference to bring together clinical, research, policy, prevention and education health professionals was envisioned.  And, after 18 months of planning by over 50 volunteers and staff from 5 organizations, Vascular 2013 was created.

Public Information/Education
Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists
Negative CBC stories – especially an episode of CBC’s Marketplace -- took aim at the high cost of hearing aids and laid the blame squarely on this organization’s members. The organization quickly surveyed members for facts that Marketplace did not possess or ignored and wrote a complaint letter to the CBC Ombudsman citing Marketplace for breach of CBC journalistic standards.

 They also developed an ‘infographic’ -- which they ultimately shared with the public via email and social media -- that focused on the value of hearing aids rather than their price. By popular demand, the ‘Infographic’ became a printed poster that members may purchase and display as an information tool in their offices.
Public Affairs/Government Relations
Funeral Service Association of Canada
The federal government’s Last Post Fund helps finance funeral expenses for eligible veterans. Funding had remained constant since 2001, and the Funeral Service Association of Canada’s members were essentially subsidizing these costs.Prior to Federal Budget 2013, a lobby day was coordinated with 22 MPs, including Ministers and Veterans Affairs critics, and a media campaign was launched and timed to peak on Remembrance Day.

 The campaign achieved unprecedented results with 88 stories appearing in a month and 32 million earned media impressions.
Ethical, Technical or Professional Standards
Canadian Dam Association
 This organization addresses public safety issues related to dam site. Intensive two-day workshops were held in six locations to educate dam owners and operators about  new Guidelines and suggest ways to reduce public risks. What sets this program apart is the combination of technical

Guidelines that are unique in the world; a well-documented, hands-on workshop; a detailed electronic tool for users; and an ongoing technical working group to provide trainers and program stewardship. The public is safer because of this initiative.
